The Truth about Valentine’s Day
DO you ever think Valentine’s Day is just a little bit too over-rated? I’m in a long term relationship and I do like the idea of Valentine’s Day…to an extent. What I, like so many others, don’t like is the pressure of it all. Every single shop I’ve been into has a ridiculously large amount of love-hearts plastered to every surface available.
Now this shouldn’t be an issue but it gets a bit tiring, quite like seeing Christmas decorations before Halloween – a serious pet-hate for me! Like I said, the idea in theory is great and sweet – what is better than a celebration of love? But there is another side and that’s the cost! Let’s get real, 99% of all the ‘gifts’ I’ve seen are overpriced and the only difference I can see is they have a big heart on them. Then we have the pressure of finding the right gift. It’s already so soon after Christmas, I’m out of ideas and while I love teddies, I don’t think my partner shares my passion quite as much.
I think a lot of you would agree that it, like so many other things, has become way too commercialised, with every company milking it for as much as they can. So yes, there are some cute pieces out there (far more aimed towards women, in my opinion) but are they necessary? I definitely prefer smaller gifts or ideas. I’m really not one for massive romantic gestures because I get all embarrassed and usually end up doing something silly because I’m super clumsy! So this year, let’s not go spending loads of money on everything and anything that has a heart or the words ‘I love you’ plonked on there. Go for something a bit more unique…or thoughtful. You don’t have to spend lots of money or get dragged down by overpriced gift sets, make it a bit more personal.
Here are some of my own ideas:
- Breakfast in bed
- A cup of tea or coffee (choose your poison!)
- Run a nice relaxing bath for your significant other
- Cook a nice dinner
- Watch each other’s all-time favourite movie
To all the men out there, don’t panic. It’s one day and it should be enjoyed! If you’re really stuck – chocolate, if you know her favourite type, even better! If one of the many gifts specifically designed for Valentine’s Day has well and truly won your heart (it does happen!), you’ll be amazed at how much the price drops after Valentine’s Day!
So whether you’re single or in a relationship, Happy Valentine’s Day and no matter what you end up doing, I hope you have a great day!
