Sure Look, Who Needs Oxegen?
I am not going to lie, I was extremely disappointed when the eagerly awaited line-up for Oxegen was finally released. I have never attended the festival before – I had big plans to last summer – but, of course, I had to pick the year they were to take a break. So, I had fully decided that “I’m most definitely going next year”– until I caught sight of the 2013 line-up. Not a decent band to be seen. In fact, here’s actually not even a guitar to be seen, is there? How could Oxegen suddenly change from providing us with great bands such as Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes and Coldplay to providing us with not-so-great Pitbull. I’m not even sure what Pitbull is classified as – singer, rapper? I can’t imagine many people going to Oxegen especially to see the man who rhymes ‘Kodak’ with ‘Kodak’ live.
Not to give Pitbull all the slating, I was rather surprised to see that the whole line-up is practically DJs. Don’t get me wrong, some of the DJs that have been announced as part of the line-up are actually quite good, for example Mr. Guetta and your man of the Harris’ but if I’m totally honest, I would actually have no interest in watching them live. I would rather sit out in my backyard, blare a few of their tunes and have a few cans by myself, which takes me to the actual point I want to make.
There are many of you who actually do have an interest in attending Oxegen this year, then another majority of you who have chosen to live it up at Electric Picnic instead (acts include Ellie Goulding, Arctic Monkeys, Johnny Marr and a number of others). I would much rather attend Electric Picnic this summer, after comparing their line-up to Oxegen’s. However, there are another majority of you who maybe can’t afford to go to any festival this summer or just aren’t bothered. Well, for those of you aren’t going to any festival, why not create your own? Don’t look at me like I have four heads, I’m being dead serious!
Call up your close friends, gather up some cans and set up camp in a field (one that’s not out-of-bounds) or if you’re really stuck for a place, hold the event in your backyard! And don’t forget to make a killer playlist, one that can cover everyone’s music tastes! (See below for a sample playlist to help you choose some songs from) Use battery-run iPod speakers (bring extra batteries) or make a CD and if somebody is willing to use their car as the music source then the volume will be louder and more festival-like. Just make sure not to wake the neighbours!
If you’re lucky enough to have a friend who plays guitar and can sing, then why not have a sing-song around a campfire? And what’s a campfire without a few toasted marshmallows? Creating your very own festival has a lot of advantages: it’s cheap, safe (depending on where you set up, make sure it’s not near some freaky, isolated woods where another Hannibal Lector or Freddie Krueger could be lurking) and you can choose which day to hold it depending on the weather – whereas Oxegen has set dates so there is a high chance you could get caught up in a rainstorm. And that can be expected out of the good auld Irish weather. You also get to choose your own music, so that means you don’t have to put up with Pitbull, yay! Unless you have a friend who is a mad fan or maybe you’re a huge fan yourself, then by all means stick some Pitbull on that deadly playlist! Enjoy!
