Light It Up Gold
LIGHT It Up Gold was founded with an aim to raise awareness for children’s cancer. September has seen two great events organised by this charity, which is made up mainly of members who have or know a child who has been through cancer. Buildings across the country have been lit up throughout the month. The inspiration was initially taken from an American based charity which lit up many landmark areas such as Niagara Falls for childhood cancer. This charity is so important as not only does it raise awareness of how many children have cancer, but it brings parents and relatives of sufferers together to unite against this illness.
The first was a candle-lit walk led by Dublin City’s mayor and was a 30-minute walk round Stephen’s Green. People of all ages attended and even some little ones who currently have cancer were proudly walked around in their buggies. There was such a feeling of support and unity. Hundreds attended and many more joined in en route. The Dublin City Gospel Choir sang afterwards and lifted everyone’s spirits.
The second was a ball held in the Gibson Hotel, situated on Dublin’s Docklands. The neighbouring O2 building also got involved and was lit up gold for the night. It was amazing to be in a room full of people who have been through such an amount of stress and strain but could still put a smile on their face and partied for the night. It was clear that a lot of work went into the detail of the event, from hand-made centre pieces on the table to golden bows for everybody to attach to their clothes.
All proceeds from these events went directly to St. John’s Ward, which funds cancer research. Please get behind this charity. There are too many people dying from cancer and the more funding put in to research means that hopefully there will be an end to the suffering soon. Get involved and wear something gold this month!
