Intrigue’s Inspirational Women
IN honour of International Women’s Day, we’ve compiled a list of 10 of the women we admire the most. Inspiration can take many forms whether it is women fighting for human rights, equality or the right to education or even women in our own lives who we have seen give their lives and time for others. Here, we have listed some of the women who we think are inspirational for a whole lot of different reasons – although we know every woman can be inspirational in her own right.
Malala Yousafzai (Michelle)
We’ve mentioned Malala as an inspirational women on the site before but she will never stop being an inspiration to us all. Taking a firm and peaceful stand against the Taliban for women’s rights, Malala has done more for humanity than any other girl her age and doesn’t cease to stop fighting.
Hillary Clinton (Nadine)
Hillary Clinton is a lady who can verbally take down stupid, sexist and narrow minded politicians with grace and integrity. She is one of the most influential women in world politics and has been a First Lady as well as a presidential candidate and the Secretary of State. Not bad for a young girl who wanted to be an astronaut, huh?
Amy Huberman (Aoife)
Amy Huberman may be married to the famous BOD but she is not your typical WAG. She has her own successful career as a novelist, actress and one of the funniest women out there. Her Twitter account is gas and she is a great mum to the extremely cute Sadie!
Meryl Streep (Katie)
Meryl Streep is one of the most talented and inspirational actresses of our time. We loved her in the Devil Wears Prada and she has been Oscar-nominated EIGHTEEN times! She is also a spokeswoman for the National Women’s History Museum in the US. She could even play Batman if she wanted!
Lupita Nyong’o (Brige)
Lupita is an incredibly talented and beautiful actress who promotes being happy in your own skin no matter the colour and an inspiration in working hard and self-belief. This week, she won an Oscar for her first ever film role in 12 Years a Slave and is reportedly dating our own Michael Fassbender!
Philomena Lee (Clodagh)
After falling pregnant at 18 and being sent to Sean Ross Abbey, Roscrea, where her son was taken away from her and adopted without her permission, she never gave up hope in finding him. She used her experience to help others and set up the ‘Philomena Project’, which campaigns for women whose children were taken away from them to be allowed access to their adoption records.
Tina Fey (Roisin)
Tina Fey is a pillar of common sense and reason in an industry (entertainment) gone mad. She’s warm, witty, excellent at what she does and proves that there is no need to undermine or cut anyone down to be a success. Also she wrote Mean Girls and we would love to be able to write anything half as clever or hilarious.
Tara Flynn (Amanda)
A little closer to home, we have Tara Flynn, an Irish comedian. Her sketches are current, brave and funny and she isn’t afraid to discuss subjects that others won’t. She tackles subjects like women’s right and homosexuality in a satirical way and keeps us all laughing!
Joanne O’Riordan (Fiona)
Joanne Riordan from County Cork is an inspiration to us all. Joanne was born without limbs but refuses to let this interfere with her dreams. Her motto is ‘No Limbs No Limits’ and her documentary follows her journey from her hometown to the UN where she delivered a key-note speech. She also plans to live independently at college.
My Mum (and Mums everywhere) (Emily)
As with a lot of other women, my mum is an inspiration to me. So many women, like my mum, give up their lives and opportunities to be good parents and often have to do it all on their own. It makes me happy that I can make my mum proud and I know I’m not the only person who feels this way about their mother.
