How Kim Kardashian Took Her Body Back
KIM Kardashian has had naked pictures either leaked or published nearly every year since she burst onto our screens in Keeping Up With The Kardashians in 2007. In fact, you’ve probably seen more of her body than you have your own. So what is it that makes her Paper magazine cover so significant? Why is this the picture that will break the internet? Let’s take a look at the history of Kim K’s nudity.
Feb 2007: The first time many of us saw Kim minus her clothes was when her 2003 sex tape with American musician Ray J was leaked in February 2007. Kim sued porn distributor, Vivid Entertainment, and settled for no less than $5million. Depressingly, Ray J’s betrayal still earns him around $30,000 per month from its views. While Kim was upset about the breach of trust at the time, she used it as fuel for her reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Oct 2007: During one of the earliest episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kim was asked to shoot a cover for the December issue of Playboy magazine. Initially, Kim was completely against the idea but eventually agreed, all the while insisting that it would be written into the contract that she wouldn’t be fully nude. After Hugh scheduled a personal meeting with her, Kim reluctantly took her clothes off but managed to keep her private parts covered with diamonds and pearls. As you do.
Nov 2010: Kim’s cover of W magazine was published. There was both full-frontal nudity and a picture of her enviable booty and although she was covered in silver paint, Kim had been told that text and artwork would be covering her lady parts. She was seen to be understandably furious in the season premiere of Kourtney and Kim take New York and vowed that she would never pose naked again.
Nov 2013: Following the birth of her daughter North in June 2013, it seems Kim decided to give the nudity another go. She appeared topless in some risque scenes of Kanye West’s music video, ‘Bound 2‘. Unfortunately this largely went unnoticed, due to the all round cringey-ness of the video.
May 2014: Kim began this year as she meant to go on with a naked photoshoot in Harpers Bazaar. Granted, there weren’t any full frontal or booty shots but she did manage to strip completely naked in an attempt to expose celebrities without any airbrushing or Photoshop. In the article itself, Kim admitted she wished she hadn’t posed for Playboy, implying that her mother, Kris Jenner, pressured her into it and that she was uncomfortable at the time.
Aug 2014: This past summer, naked photos of Kim, which she had taken herself, were released alongside thousands of other celeb nudes, during what was disgustingly dubbed ‘the fappening.’ While Kim’s pics were somewhat overshadowed by the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Vanessa Hudgens, nonetheless she was included in one of the biggest privacy violations of the decade.
Sep 2014: Just days after ‘the fappening’, Kim was announced GQ Woman of the Year. The accompanying spread in GQ magazine consisted of Kim wearing nothing but a pair of Manolo Blahniks. Cleverly-placed limbs and sneaky camera angles prevented Kim from showing too much, but it certainly set the tone for her next magazine cover.
Nov 2014: After the publication of Paper magazine’s winter issue earlier this month, Kim cast away what little privacy she had remaining in an attempt to break the internet. With four scandalous photos, including a full frontal in which she’s wearing nothing but a necklace, Kim has certainly succeeded in doing just that. What’s more is, she did it all for free. In contrast to her earlier shoots where fame and money drove all of her (and her momager’s) decision making, this spread demonstrates the first time that Kim has acted independently and done something unplanned and with no financial compensation.
So what have we learned from this history (or anatomy) lesson? Mostly, that Kim gets naked a lot. But more importantly, we can see the change in the way in which she views her own body and her self worth. Her figure went from being something she was ashamed of after the leak of her sex tape; something she was pressured into selling for a Playboy cover; something which was used without her permission in W magazine to something which is finally her own.
Her Paper photos represent a victory over the betrayals of her past. Kim is no longer bound by threats of nude photos leaking or of magazines taking advantage of her. She has willingly exposed her most valuable assests for free and by doing so, she has ensured that they can no longer be used against her.
