To Detox Or Not To Detox: That Is The Question
OK, we have all thought about doing one and we are all skeptical about them. But do detoxes actually work?
Well it’s something I have always wondered so I decided to try it out! Just to be clear – a detox doesn’t mean starving yourself for days. It’s essentially not eating but you are giving your body nutrients in other ways, so don’t attempt to do this if you are going to just eat nothing. It’ll be unhealthy and in the long run, causes more bad than good.
Ok so, first, you’ve to choose a detox to suit you. There are so many around that you just have to search on Google and you’ll be bombarded with options.
I went for the fruit detox – I felt it was something I needed as I’m not the best for eating my five a day! In this detox you blend and drink fruit and veg for every meal and drink over two litres of water everyday.
There are options you can buy already blended but this can be expensive, so if you’re clever about it you can juice all you need for three days and freeze it, all sorted! I opted for three days as I think anymore and I would have gone nutty!
So day one. I found this day extremely hard! It’s the first day and your body is wondering what the hell are you doing to it! On this day I opted for very sweet juice as the day is hard enough without trying to force yourself to drink broccoli juice. For the first day you’re better off to plan it on a day you’re off. Otherwise you will find yourself looking at your work colleagues with pure hatred as they eat their lunches while you sit nursing an orange juice.
This day you will feel light headed and faint; it is the hardest day and if you make it through this the rest will seem a breeze. On day two and three, you’ll find the strangest thing occur. Your body will have adapted to the detox: you will no longer feel hungry, faint or weak, you actually think clearer, have more energy and feel a lot better.
As strange as it may sound depriving your body of food and putting it into a state of shock in a detox: it actually wakes you up, makes you feel more alive, you feel more energetic and you don’t feel the need to eat at all. Your body is nourished by the juice you are providing it with and as a result, you are healthier and happier.
After the three days are over and you go back to eating food – you’re more aware of what you’re eating. You’re switched on to your food choices and suddenly you’re not so easily tempted by that chocolate bar or packet of taytos. I think for me, the thing it really did was make me aware of how much the food we eat affects us. I have certainly never been a healthy eater and I will probably never be completely but this did help me to make good choices about what I put into my body. So why not give it a go! Make sure to comment and let us know how it goes!
