Beyonce and Liftgate
SISTERS. Even Beyoncé has to put up with them. For those unaware of the incident that occurred at the Met Ball – kindly released on the internet by a staff member at the hotel where it was held – the video showed a fuming Sologne attempting to beat Jay Z, with a bodyguard intervening. Beyoncé stood motionless between the two. Moments later, they recomposed themselves with Beyonce returning home in a car with Sologne; Jay Z separately.
Inevitably enough, the video has been shared everywhere and numerous memes and jokes are posted at the expense of the parties involved. Needless to say, it is impossible to escape it on the internet, with the Daily Mail kindly going to the length of hiring a body language expert to deciper Beyoncé’s reaction to the incident in the lift.
Admittedly, what shocked me the most was that it was Beyonce and Jay Z. Naïve as it may be, this was the golden couple who merely hours before had staged a mock engagement on the red carpet at the ball. This was the most financially powerful couple in the world, the couple who were rarely seen separate. Certainly, there was no sign of Beyonce’s alter ego ‘Sasha Fierce’ as she idly stood and watched the altercation, fixing her dress at one point. While many keyboard warriors criticised the lack of ‘Sasha Fierce,’ others praised her for her dignity in the situation.
That said, we do have to ask ourselves – what are we exactly looking to get from watching the video? For those amongst us claiming it for mere entertainment value, we should probably bear in mind that Sologne is alleged to battle both bipolar disorder and drug problems. Certainly, we should also reconsider counting shameless violence as entertainment. Lesson learnt. And what about those of us smugly watching as Beyoncé – the self-proclaimed Queen B – helplessly watches? Are we supposed to celebrate that Beyonce’s life may not be as perfect as it seems? Should we feel guilt for needing to validate our relationships on that?
In my opinion, no. What makes the incident so endearing is the irony of the situation. Beyoncé has found herself in the middle of a situation similar to one that would occur if Miley Cyrus took a jaunt down Henry Street. The situation is made so entertaining when one considers the efforts that Beyoncé and Jay Z go to convince the rest of us mere mortals that she is superhuman – sings that she is ‘flawless’, orders we refer to her as ‘Queen B’ while ‘bowing down’ and assures us that she isn’t just Jay Z’s ‘little wife’. Of course, it is an unfortunate incident – and no doubt upsetting for all parties involved – but I only wish that this video was released two years ago when I exited a Beyoncé concert vowing that I would probably never be half the woman she is. Needless to say, the incident is unlikely to taint Beyoncé or Jay Z’s amazing talents and reputations but in the meantime, we can take solace in the fact that even Beyoncé is far from perfect. Apologies to any Beyhive members out there. It’s certain that Beyoncé will bounce back in typical Beyoncé fashion from the incident and possibly write a power ballad about it.
Beyoncé, can you handle this? I definitely think so. I’m off to laugh at the memes again.
